Making sure everyone in your company is going in the same direction or more importantly the direction you want them to go in can be a daunting task.
Having everyone going in the same AND right direction takes the challenge to whole new levels. The more employees you have the more difficult makes ensuring alignment company-wide increasingly difficult.
I thought I would come up with a few steps you can take to being the process of alignment.
Notice that I said the “process” of alignment. As business owners, we can be fooled into thinking that once we get everyone going in the right direction, we’re done. This is something you need to ensure is happening all the time. It’s like the law of physics; objects in motion tend to stay in motion. It only takes a small amount of energy to keep the ball rolling, but can take an extreme amount of effort to get that ball rolling after it’s stopped.
So here are the steps:
1. Define where do you want to go?
Obviously if YOU don’t know where you want your business to go, how are you going to make sure everyone else is going there? Let’s take this to a more practical level. What specifically do you want your employees to accomplish? What is there mission? You must be VERY clear about you vision. If you’re not clear, your staff will make something up.
2. Define How will you determine you’ve accomplished the mission?
Ok, you’ve explicitly described your vision for each are of your company. Now, you need to put a system in place to measure if and when your staff accomplishes or fails to accomplish their mission. This can take time as you hone is what to measure and when.
3. Rinse and Repeat
You must revisit your vision and mission on a regular basis. Metrics help you to staff on track.
